Lupita colocó las rosas en un jarrón de cristal sobre la mesa.
Un tallo se inclinó hacia un lado, doblado pero aún floreciendo.
Lily stood barefoot on the carpet in her pajamas, rubbing one eye with her fist.
“Put them by the window,” she said.
Ethan se agachó a su lado. – ¿Por qué ahí?
“Así que mamá puede verlos”.
For a moment, Ethan could not speak.
Lupita se volvió ligeramente, dándole la misericordia de la privacidad.
He placed the vase by the glass.
The roses glowed against the city lights.
Lily touched the bent one gently.
“Esta flor parece cansada”.
Lupita sonrió. “A veces las flores cansadas solo necesitan agua y tiempo frescos. Entonces se mantienen de pie de nuevo”.
Lily considered that like it was serious science.
“Daddy is tired too.”
Ethan hizo una suave risa. “Papá está bien”.
Lily looked at Lupita. “That means he’s not fine.”
Lupita’s eyes warmed.
“She’s smart,” she said.
“Ella obtiene eso de su madre”.
Lily climbed onto the couch and tucked the gray bunny under her chin.
“Mommy liked roses,” she murmured.
“Sí,” dijo Ethan.
“She liked red ones because they looked brave.”
Ethan nodded.
Lily closed her eyes again.
Within a minute, she was asleep.
The room settled into quiet.
Lupita se movió hacia la puerta. – Los dejaré a los dos.
“Wait,” Ethan said.
She stopped.
He kept his voice low so he would not wake Lily.
“Thank you for not looking away.”
Lupita lowered her eyes.
“Sé lo que se siente cuando la gente te mira”, dijo. “Después de que mi esposo murió, trabajé mañanas aquí, noches en un restaurante, los fines de semana limpiando oficinas. Mis hijos dormían en la habitación de atrás con sus abrigos sobre ellos. Algunas personas eran amables. Algunas personas me hablaron como si fuera parte de los muebles”.
