“Mío”.
The lobby went still.
Robert raised both hands. “My login must have been left open. Someone used it. That system is shared during busy shifts.”
Ethan’s eyes hardened.
Robert had no answer.
Patricia began to cry.
It came quickly, too quickly, as if she kept tears ready for emergencies.
“I have children,” she said. “I can’t lose this job over one misunderstanding.”
“Having children did not give you the right to humiliate another parent tonight.”
Patricia covered her mouth.
Karla muttered, “This is insane.”
—No —dijo Lupita—.
Todos se volvieron hacia ella.
She set the towels down on a side table with careful hands.
“Esto es martes”.
The words were small.
But they cut deep.
Ethan la miró.
– ¿Qué quieres decir?
Lupita reached into her apron pocket and pulled out an old phone with a cracked screen. The corner was taped. The case had a faded sticker of a sunflower on it.
“My son told me to photograph everything I signed,” she said. “After management once claimed my time-off form never existed.”
Robert’s voice sharpened. “Lupita, company documents are confidential.”
Ethan felt something heavier than anger settle in his chest.
Una vergüenza.
No para Patricia.
Not for Karla.
