DESPERTÉ DE UNA CIRUGÍA DEL CORAZÓN Y MIS TRES HIJOS SE HABÍAN IDO PORQUE EL ESTACIONAMIENTO COSTABA 20 DÓLARES. ENTONCES ENTRÓ EL DUEÑO DEL HOSPITAL Y ME MOSTRÓ UN DOCUMENTO QUE REVELÓ SU VERDADERO PLAN.

Eleanor también me aconsejó no firmar nada mientras estuviera medicada o confundida.

Aquella noche, David me llamó.

“Mom, how are you feeling?”

Su voz sonaba extrañamente alegre.

“Mejor.”

“Good. Listen, we need to discuss your recovery arrangements.”

“¿Qué arreglos?”

“Sarah found a very nice assisted-living facility.”

Cerré los ojos.

“David, todavía no he salido del hospital.”

“Exactly. We need to plan ahead.”

“¿Y mi casa?”

Hubo un silencio.

“Mom, maintaining that property is becoming difficult.”

“Para mí no.”

“Don’t be stubborn.”

Sentí una punzada en el pecho.

“David, ¿fuiste hoy a una reunión con un abogado?”

El silencio fue más largo.

“Who told you that?”

No respondí.

“Mom, we’re only trying to protect you.”

“Entonces ¿por qué no me invitaron a la conversación?”

“Because you get emotional about money.”

Miré a Malcolm, que estaba sentado al otro lado de la habitación.

“¿Y el estacionamiento?”
