The car finally gave out behind a row of restaurants, wedged between dumpsters and delivery trucks that smelled like everything I couldn’t afford.

I sat there with my forehead pressed against the steering wheel, listening to traffic and trying not to lose it.

Eventually, hunger took over.

I slipped around back, hoping to find something that hadn’t been touched.

Bread.

Fries.

Anything.

I wasn’t proud of it.

I was just tired of going hungry.

That’s when someone called my name.

“Excuse me — are you Nathan Brooks?”

I went still.

When you’re living out of a car, being noticed is terrifying.

My first instinct was to leave.

Instead, I turned around.

He didn’t look like a police officer.

Or a social worker.

Or any kind of trouble.

He looked like he belonged somewhere entirely different.

Tailored suit.

Polished shoes.

Perfect tie.

The kind of man who normally wouldn’t end up behind restaurants.

“Who’s asking?” I said.

He took out a business card and handed it to me like we were meeting in an office instead of beside trash bins.

“My name is Richard Hartwell,” he said. “I’ve been trying to find you.”

No one had ever said that to me before.

“I represent the estate of James Brooks,” he continued. “Your grandfather.”

I laughed bitterly.

“I don’t have a grandfather. He died before I was born.”

Something shifted in his expression — not pity, but seriousness.

“That isn’t true,” he said quietly. “Your grandfather died a few weeks ago. And he instructed us to find you immediately.”

The ground seemed to move beneath me.

</ins>

“Why?” I asked.

His eyes drifted toward my car.

My clothes.

The alley around us.

Then he dropped his voice.

“Because,” he said, “he left everything to you. The house. The business. The accounts. Everything.”

Ten minutes earlier, I had been wondering whether someone had tossed out food.

Now a stranger was telling me I owned more than I could possibly imagine.

He held my gaze.

“But there’s one condition,” he said. “And it changes everything.” I know you’re wondering what happens next, so please keep reading in the comments below.

I stared at Richard.

“A condition?”

He nodded.

My stomach tightened.

Of course there was a condition.

For about thirty seconds, I’d allowed myself to imagine that something impossible had happened—that one person in my family had actually thought about what might happen to me.

Now I expected the catch.

Richard opened the folder he was carrying.

“Your grandfather anticipated that reaction,” he said. “The condition isn’t what you think.”

“What is it?”

“You cannot transfer, sell, or give control of the business—or the house—to your father for five years.”

I blinked.

“What?”

Richard looked directly at me.

“Your grandfather was very specific. Your father is not to manage your inheritance, borrow against it, or act on your behalf.”

A strange laugh escaped me.

“Why would he write that?”

Richard was silent for a moment.

“Because he knew your father.”

Those five words changed the temperature of the alley.

Richard suggested we go somewhere private.

Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in a booth inside the restaurant I’d been searching behind for food.

The car finally gave out behind a row of restaurants, wedged between dumpsters and delivery trucks that smelled like everything…

[1

post-6422","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
