Milo was on the stairs. I didn\u2019t know that until later. He\u2019d come down for the tape himself.<\/p>\n
He said, from the landing, \u201cShe knows when someone\u2019s kind to her.\u201d<\/p>\n
That is a verbatim quote and he was eight years old.<\/p>\n
Rosalind put the dress down on the table and sat back in her chair and asked somebody to pass the beans.<\/p>\n
The party was Tuesday. Six people in Rhonda\u2019s back yard, a store cake, a sprinkler.<\/p>\n
Rhonda got the dress on her and Birdie made a sound I have never heard a human being make before or since, grabbed the skirt in both fists, and spun until she went over sideways into the grass laughing.<\/p>\n
Milo laughed harder than anybody there.<\/p>\n
Rhonda posted three photos that night. That\u2019s all. Three photos and about four sentences about a neighbor boy and where the dress came from.<\/p>\n
At 6:30 the next morning my son came through my bedroom door at a dead run.<\/p>\n
\u201cMOM. You have to see this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Our front lawn was covered in lunchboxes.<\/p>\n
Fifty of them, easily. Dinosaurs, footballs, superheroes, a pink unicorn, two identical Star-patterned ones, a tin one shaped like a school bus. They went from the porch steps almost to the sidewalk in loose rows, and there was dew on all of them, which meant they had been out there for hours.<\/p>\n
Milo stood in the doorway in his pajamas with his mouth open.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre they all for me?\u201d<\/p>\n
I genuinely did not know.<\/p>\n
Then he saw the one in the middle.<\/p>\n
It was sitting alone with a gap around it, like the others had been placed to leave it room. A big old metal lunchbox, the workman\u2019s kind, dented all down one side, the paint mostly gone to bare steel.<\/p>\n
There was an index card taped to the lid.<\/p>\n
OPEN THIS ONE FIRST.<\/em><\/p>\n He knelt down in the wet grass and undid the clasp.<\/p>\n And then he didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n Four seconds. Five. My son knelt on our lawn with the lid open and did not move a muscle, and then he scrambled backward on his hands, and when he got to his feet he was shaking.<\/p>\n His face had gone completely white.<\/p>\n \u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhat.
